Sustainability

Currie Community is on old building but we are striving to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

We have already achieved the below changes so far:

  • Changed all lighting to LED
  • Made recycling easier with clearly marked bins
  • Only use reusable dishware and crockery for the café
  • Only use recyclable and biodegradable dishware and crockery for events and café takeaway.
  • Set up a battery collection box for the community within the lounge
  • Set up a ink cartridge collection box for the community within the lounge 
  • Encouraged staff, volunteers and Centre users to uses bus routes rather than drive
  • Left a fallen tree to create a bug hotel
  • Installed bike racks to encourage cycling to the Centre and link to cycle network
  • Drop off point for bikes for refugees
  • Sustainable period products are available from the Centre
  • Created a compost bin
  • Partnered with sustainably run coffee roasters 

 

Future sustainability projects include:

  • Moving the Centre to solar panels
  • Setting up a soft plastics drop off

 

Red Squirrel Coffee is the Community Centre's coffee of choice.

Edinburgh based Red Squirrel Coffee is committed to producing an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional coffee. They have partnered with the Green Earth Appeal who have recognised them as Sustainably Run Coffee Roastersclick here to find out more.

 

Bikes for Refugees Scotland

Currie community Centre has become a drop off point for bikes for Refugess helping support isolated and disadvantage new Scots with free and sustainable mode of transport  **please contact BFR to arrange drop off. Contact form can be found HERE

 

Sustainable period products are available for free in both our disabled and ladies toilets.  The Centre can be accessed without barrier during term time between 9 and 12pm on Saturday mornings when the Cafe is open

 

 

Recycle Your Ink Cartridges at Currie Community Centre.

Recycling box can be found in the lounge area.

The Centre will receive £2 for every 15 cartridges recycled. Money raised will be put towards the regeneration of the Centre and community projects.
